Overview
Ulgrax the Devourer is the first boss encounter in the Nerub’ar Palace raid. This encounter is primarily about managing Ulgrax’s hunger while dealing with the various mechanics that test your raid’s coordination and positioning. Below is an overview of the main abilities you’ll face during this fight, categorized by role.
Main Abilities
- Brutal Crush (Tanks): A frontal cone attack that deals heavy physical damage and applies a healing reduction debuff. Tanks must face Ulgrax away from the raid and swap when debuff stacks get too high.
- Venomous Lash (Healers): A raid-wide DoT (Damage over Time) that deals moderate damage to all players. Healers should focus on consistent raid healing and be ready to dispel if necessary.
- Digestive Acid (All Roles): Targets several players with a green circle debuff that clears webs when it expires, dealing damage to anyone inside the circle. Affected players should move away from others before the debuff expires.
- Ravenous Spawn (DPS): Small adds that spawn throughout the room, applying a bleed effect and dropping “Chunky Viscera” upon death. DPS should kill these adds quickly to prevent them from overwhelming the raid.
- Juggernaut Charge (All Roles): Ulgrax charges across the room, dealing massive damage to anyone in his path. All players must dodge the charge by moving out of its path.
- Swallowing Darkness (All Roles): A large purple circle spawns under a random player, dealing massive damage to anyone inside. Players must quickly move out of the circle to avoid taking damage.
- Hungering Bellows (All Roles): Ulgrax begins to glow, increasing his damage output with each cast. Players must throw Chunky Viscera into Ulgrax to manage his hunger and prevent his damage from becoming overwhelming.

Ulgrax the Devourer Boss Guide for Nerub-ar Palace
(Normal, Heroic, and Mythic)
Phase 1: Ulgrax’s Assault
During this phase, Ulgrax will unleash a series of abilities that require careful positioning, coordination, and quick reactions.
- Brutal Crush (Tanks)
- Ability: A frontal cone attack that deals heavy physical damage and applies a debuff reducing healing by 10% per stack. Brutal Crush
- Strategy: Tanks should face Ulgrax away from the raid and swap when the debuff stacks become too high. Positioning is crucial to avoid unnecessary raid damage.
- Venomous Lash (Healers)
- Ability: This is a raid-wide DoT (Damage over Time) that deals moderate damage to all players. Venomous Lash
- Strategy: Healers need to prepare for consistent healing throughout the fight, with a focus on dispelling the DoT if it becomes overwhelming.
- Digestive Acid (All Roles)
- Ability: Ulgrax will target several players with a green circle debuff. When the debuff expires, it clears webs on the ground and deals damage to anyone within the circle. Digestive Acid
- Strategy: Affected players should move away from the group before the debuff expires to minimize raid damage and strategically place the circles to clear webs efficiently.
- Ravenous Spawn (DPS)
- Ability: Small adds will spawn throughout the room. These adds apply a bleed effect and drop “Chunky Viscera” upon death. Ravenous Spawn
- Strategy: DPS should quickly eliminate these adds to prevent them from overwhelming the raid. The dropped Chunky Viscera is crucial for managing Ulgrax’s hunger later in the fight.
Phase 2: Feeding Time
As Ulgrax’s energy depletes, he transitions into a more aggressive state, introducing new mechanics.
- Juggernaut Charge (All Roles)
- Ability: Ulgrax charges across the room, dealing massive damage to anyone in his path. Juggernaut Charge
- Strategy: All players must dodge this ability by staying out of Ulgrax’s charge line. Failure to do so can result in instant death, especially on higher difficulties.
- Swallowing Darkness (All Roles)
- Ability: A large purple circle spawns under a random player, dealing massive damage to anyone caught inside. Swallowing Darkness
- Strategy: The affected player and those around them must move out of the circle quickly. This circle also clears any webs within its radius, which can be strategically used to manage web placement.
- Hungering Bellows (All Roles)
- Ability: Ulgrax begins to glow, increasing his damage output with each subsequent cast. Hungering Bellows
- Strategy: To prevent Ulgrax from becoming too powerful, players need to throw Chunky Viscera into Ulgrax using the extra action button. This mechanic intensifies in Heroic and Mythic modes, requiring precise timing and coordination.
Mythic Mode Enhancements
Mythic mode introduces several additional challenges that demand near-perfect execution:
- Hardened Netting: Players can no longer use immunities to clear webs, making web management more critical.
- Insatiable Rage: Each subsequent shout from Ulgrax increases his damage by 10%, forcing the raid to deal with escalating pressure as the fight progresses.
- Bioactive Spines (Additional Adds): Priority adds that spawn, applying debuffs that need to be managed carefully by DPS and healers.
Key Tips
- DPS: Focus on quick add management and ensure you are ready to throw Viscera into Ulgrax to manage his hunger.
- Tanks: Keep Ulgrax positioned away from the raid and communicate clearly on tank swaps.
- Healers: Be prepared for sustained raid-wide damage, especially during transitions.
